Municipality in La Conca de Barberà, located right in the middle of the region, to the left of the Anguera River.

The municipality takes up 8.16km2. It is a flat territory in its southern part and also rugged by the last foothills of La Serra del Tallat. Two gullies go through Pira ( El del Xarro and El del Molí) and fow into the Anguera. The old town has a very original location on a high massif of a peninsular shape( 384 metres above sea level) skirted round by the Torrentill torrent and the gorge of the Anguera River. This is where the first houses were built sheltered by its castle in the 11th century.

The suburbs of Pira, Pireta, Piroia, Carrerada and the new housing estate in Miralpeix are a dependency of Pira.

For many years the main economical activity was agriculture complemented with some poultry and porcine farms. These latter, though, have completely disappeared nowadays.

The number of peasants has gradually decreased and many residents of Pira travel daily to work in the factories located in La Conca de Barberà and L'Alt Camp.

An 85% of the land is dedicated to the growing of vine, cereal, almond and olive trees. During the 19th century the wine and brandy made in Pira were well known all over Catalunya , but this situation radically changed with the spreading of the philloxera plague. There also were some gypsum mills working in Pira during the 60ies and 70ies, they were supplied by the quarries in the area. Nowadays, there are still two small factories in town, one that sells mineral products and another one that makes decorative objects. The opening of an industrial estate has tried to reactivate this sector and some small factories have been recently opened.

Tourism & Excursions

Camping area ' El Tossal de la Bala'. It is located in the most elevated spot in town and has a beautiful view, its location was thought to enjoy nature in a incomparable and peaceful setting. Besides the camping lot , the place includes the services of shower, toilet , drinking water and a sheltered area to protect the hikers from the inclemency of the weather. (# 977887006).

Sports Area. This field counts with a swimming pool a football pitch and a course court to practise many other sports.

Amusement areas. There are two perfect spots to enjoy the river and the woods, ono located by the Anguera River and another one by La Font del Pi. Also the parks of Miralpeix and del Passeig are worth visiting.

Font d'Ollers: take a good hiking trip along the Partida de Santinyà to the old Ollers fountain and stop to contemplate the gorge of the Anguera River.

Footpaths: many footpaths and tracks traverse Pira. The most important route is the one from Poblet to Montserrat.
